Built Before the Storm

Built Before the Storm
July 28, 2026
Scripture: Matthew 7:24–27; James 1:19–25
Because storms reveal the foundation we have been building on, disciples do not merely hear God’s Word — they receive it with humility and practice it through daily obedience.
Imagine This…
Imagine two houses that look almost identical from the outside.
Same walls. Same roof. Same windows. Same view. For a while, no one can tell the difference.
Then the storm comes.
The rain is falling. The floods rise. The winds beat against both houses. Suddenly, what was hidden becomes obvious. The difference was never mainly what people could see from the outside. The difference was the foundation underneath.
Jesus says something similar about our lives.
It is possible to hear His words, know His words, respect His words, even admire His words —
and still not build our lives on them.
James says it another way: we can hear the Word and deceive ourselves if we do not do what it says. The foundation is not merely what we hear. The foundation is what we practice.
What Is There to Learn?
- Storms Reveal What We Are Building On.
Jesus does not say one house faced storms and the other did not. Both houses were hit. Following Jesus does not exempt us from pressure, grief, disappointment, temptation, conflict, or uncertainty. Storms reveal whether our confidence is built on comfort, control, approval, success, or Christ. - Hearing Is Not the Same as Obeying.
The wise person is not simply the one who hears the words of Jesus. The wise person hears and does them. James warns us not to be hearers only, deceiving ourselves. A life built on Christ is formed when God’s Word moves from information to obedience. - Receiving the Word Requires a Teachable Spirit.
James tells us to be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, and to receive the implanted Word with meekness. Obedience begins with posture — humility, teachability, repentance, and a willingness to let God’s Word correct us. - Obedience Builds Resilience Before the Crisis.
Foundations are not usually built during the storm. They are built before it. Every time we forgive, tell the truth, resist temptation, pray, serve, surrender, repent, or trust God when it is costly, we are learning to stand on the words of Jesus.
Bold Steps of Faith
This week, do not only ask, “What do I believe?”
Ask, “What am I practicing?”
Choose one teaching of Jesus that needs to move from something you agree with to something you obey.
You might start here:
- Be quick to listen before defending yourself.
- Be slow to speak when you want to react.
- Be slow to anger when pressure exposes frustration.
- Forgive someone instead of rehearsing the offense.
- Choose generosity over self-protection.
- Serve without needing recognition.
- Reconcile where you have been avoiding the conversation.
- Trust God with an area you keep trying to control.
Do not wait for the storm to start building your foundation.
Practice the words of Jesus now.
Receive the Word with humility. Look honestly into it. Then do what it says.
Small obedience today becomes strength for tomorrow.
Reflection Questions
- What storm or pressure is revealing what I have been building my life on?
- Where have I been hearing God’s Word but not practicing it?
- Am I receiving the Word with humility, or resisting it with defensiveness, anger, or delay?
- What is one act of obedience I need to take this week?
- How could practicing the words of Jesus make my life a steadier witness to others?
Prayer
“Jesus, help me not only hear Your words but practice them. Give me a humble and teachable heart to receive Your Word. Show me where my life is being built on comfort, control, approval, or fear. Teach me to build on You through daily obedience, so that when storms come, my life stands firm in Your grace and truth.”
