Every Story Is a Doorway

Imagine This…

Imagine walking through life as an interviewer of people.

Not in a formal, microphone-in-hand kind of way. But as someone who is genuinely curious. Someone who believes every person has a story. Someone who asks questions, listens carefully, and pays attention to the places where hope, hurt, longing, regret, joy, and grace begin to surface.

Most of us pass people every week and only know the surface details: their name, their role, their family, their job, their schedule.

But what if God is inviting us to go deeper?

What if learning someone’s story is one of the ways we represent Jesus?

A person’s story is often a doorway. When we listen well, we may begin to discover where God has been at work, where His grace is needed, and how the hope of Christ can become personal and real.

What Is There to Learn?

     
  1. People Are Not Projects.
    We do not interview people to use them, fix them, or turn them into ministry assignments. We listen because people are made in the image of God and deeply loved by Him.

  2. Questions Can Open Doors.
    A thoughtful question can move a conversation from the surface to the heart. Good questions help people reflect on their story, name their longings, and recognize where God may already be stirring something in them.

  3. Listening Can Reveal Grace.
    When we listen with humility and love, we may hear more than information. We may hear pain that needs compassion, hope that needs encouragement, confusion that needs truth, or a spiritual hunger that needs the gospel.

Bold Steps of Faith
This week, practice becoming an interviewer of people.

Choose one person and ask a better question than usual. Then listen without rushing to correct, advise, or redirect.

You might ask:

     
  • “What has shaped you the most in this season of life?”
    •  
  • “Where have you seen God’s kindness, even in a difficult time?”
    •  
  • “What is something you are carrying right now that most people would not know?”
    •  
  • “What part of your story has helped you understand grace more deeply?”
    •  
  • “Where do you need hope right now?”

Do not force the conversation. Do not make it awkward. Just be present, curious, prayerful, and attentive.

You may discover that God’s grace has already been writing parts of their story before you ever entered the conversation.

  1. Do I move through life curious about people’s stories, or do I usually stay on the surface?

  2. What would change if I saw myself as God’s representative, learning people’s stories so I could better understand where His grace may be at work?

  3. Who is one person I could intentionally listen to this week?

  4. How can I ask questions that help someone discover more of who God is and what His grace can do?

Prayer

“Jesus, teach me to see people the way You see them. Help me ask better questions, listen with love, and recognize where Your grace is already at work in someone’s story. Use me as Your representative to help others discover the hope only You can give.”
