Steady in a Shaking World

September 22nd, 2026

Scripture: Psalm 46:1–3, 10–11

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Some seasons feel solid.

Others feel like everything is moving.

·   A job changes.

·   A relationship gets strained.

·   A diagnosis comes.

·   Finances tighten.

The news feels unsettling. Something you assumed would stay stable suddenly doesn’t.

Psalm 46 was written for moments like that.

It does not describe a peaceful world. It describes mountains moving, waters roaring, and nations raging. And right in the middle of it comes this truth:

God is still there.

FAITH DOESN’T PRETEND

Christian faith is not pretending everything is fine.

Sometimes it isn’t.

Following Jesus does not make us immune to fear, disappointment, uncertainty, or loss.

But faith gives us somewhere to stand when everything else feels unstable.

Our confidence is not that nothing will shake.

Our confidence is that God does not.

PEOPLE NOTICE STEADINESS

Think about turbulence on an airplane.

When the plane starts shaking, passengers often look at the flight attendants.

Why?

Because they want to know whether the people who understand the situation are panicking.

The turbulence may still be there, but calm presence changes the atmosphere.

The same thing happens in everyday life.

People notice how we respond under pressure.

They notice whether fear controls us.

They notice whether uncertainty makes us angry, harsh, frantic, or hopeless.

And they also notice when someone carries a deeper kind of peace.

STEADY DOESN’T MEAN SILENT

Our world is filled with people carrying anxiety.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer is not an answer.

·It is presence.

·Listen.

·Stay close.

·Pray.

·Encourage.

And when the moment is right, explain why your hope is not tied to everything going your way.

You do not have to convince someone that life is easy.

You can point them toward the God who remains faithful when life is hard.

TRY THIS THIS WEEK

Think of one place where your life currently feels unsettled.

Bring it honestly to God.

Then think of one person around you who may be carrying even more uncertainty.

Reach out.

Ask how they are really doing.

Listen before offering advice.

And look for a simple way to be a calm, hopeful presence.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION

When life shakes, what do people see me standing on?

REFLECT

  1. What feels most uncertain in my life right now?
  2.
  3. Where am I tempted to place my security in something temporary?
  4.
  5. Who around me needs a steady, compassionate presence this week?

PRAY

“God, You are my refuge and strength. When life feels unstable, help me trust Your presence more than my circumstances. Make me calm, compassionate, and hopeful so that others can see something of Your faithfulness through me.”
